I’d like to add a positive and cautionary note on obtaining a reliable supply of pure gum turpentine.
Modern day paint thinners, such as turpentine substitute (aka white spirit) have a dulling effect on the vibrancy and consistency of colour pigments when they dry (especially noticeable in smaller quantities); However, this is not the case with pure gum turpentine.
In the art world, where small amounts of colour oils/pigments are used – using anything other than pure gum turpentine is unthinkable (especially in the world of art restoration where colour matching and quality is essential).
All of which means there still exists a market for the supply of pure gum turpentine, although it is more expensive (in relative terms compared to white spirit) it is not prohibitively expensive to buy or difficult to source.
In fact, the only real difficulty is sourcing it in glass or tin containers; I mention this because, as we have all become aware – plastics leach harmful toxins; therefore I cannot imagine that a plastic bottle, even with pure gum turpentine, would not become contaminated – especially as you have no way of knowing how long it has been stored in the plastic container.
